Stepping Techniques: 6-count vs. 8-count A Quick NoteBy Leon Whiten, Stepper’s Network® It is my opinion that people who say the 6-count is the new stepping technique do not understand the dance. We say we teach 8-count because that is the way we count the basic steps in our pedagogy. When I teach dance figures the count varies as needed (dancing is not mathematics) : The basic full turn is done in 6-counts, A half-turn is done in 3-counts, In our Advance Beginner Stepping class The right side pass [3] - to woman’s under arm turn [3] - to a “she-goes” [3] - to a “he goes” [3] - ending the pattern with a kick/shuffle/sync step [2] = a 14 count dance combination. Basically, 6-count stepping techniques are a sub-set of stepping dance moves. Stepping is a social dance so have fun with it because the music really drives the stepping. © 2004, Leon Whiten, all rights reserved.
